Margreet Blaas

My work explores the fragile territory between the visible and the invisible — a place where animal souls, human vulnerability and poetic imagination meet.

Rooted in realism yet reaching beyond it, my paintings inhabit the space between recognition and mystery. Animals, human figures and imagined beings emerge in worlds touched by symbolism, quiet tension and subtle transformation.

I am drawn to moments of wonder, vulnerability and the unspoken emotional connection between humans, animals and inner landscapes. Through technical precision and layered storytelling, I seek to create images that feel both intimate and slightly unsettling — inviting the viewer into a reality that is familiar, yet gently shifted.

my inspiration

I make art to explore the fragile territory between the visible and the invisible — a place where animal souls, human vulnerability and poetic imagination meet.

I am inspired by the poetic possibilities of realism: the moment something feels recognisable, yet subtly shifted into another reality. Animals, human figures, symbolism, old master traditions and dreamlike imagery all find their way into my work.

Painting allows me to give form to what often lies beyond words — wonder, vulnerability, inner experience and the quiet emotional dialogue between humans, animals and imagined worlds.

Through my work, I hope to create moments of contemplation, emotional recognition and quiet mystery. I want to invite viewers into a space where reality and imagination meet, where meanings remain open, and where something familiar can suddenly feel unexpected, intimate or strangely alive

my artistic proces and materials

My work is created primarily in oil paint, a medium I value for its richness, depth and ability to build atmosphere through layers. Working from a foundation in realism, I combine careful observation with imagination, symbolism and intuitive development. A painting rarely begins as a fixed plan; it may start with an animal, a figure, a symbolic image or a quiet emotional undertone that gradually reveals its own narrative during the painting process.

In my studio, I am interested in the delicate balance between technical precision and mystery — the point where something convincingly real begins to suggest another layer of meaning. Animals, human figures and imagined beings often emerge as carriers of atmosphere, vulnerability and psychological presence.

Alongside my paintings, I also create vintage quote plates, altered porcelain pieces and decorative assemblages. I am drawn to the history and quiet character of found objects — vintage plates, porcelain, figurines and decorative fragments that carry traces of another time. By combining these materials with humour, symbolism or contemporary text, I enjoy giving familiar objects a new context and unexpected voice.

Whether working in oil paint or with found objects and porcelain, my practice is rooted in transformation — exploring how images, materials and symbols can shift from the ordinary into something poetic, slightly surreal and emotionally resonant.

what I hope my works evokes

I hope you leave with a sense of who I am as an artist: someone who uses realism not simply to depict the visible world, but to explore what lies beneath, around and beyond it.

My work inhabits a fragile territory between reality and imagination, where animal souls, human vulnerability, symbolism and poetic atmosphere meet. Whether through painting, porcelain or found objects, I am interested in transformation — in the subtle moment when something familiar begins to reveal another story, another emotional layer or another way of seeing.

Above all, I hope my work invites people into moments of wonder, contemplation and connection — a space where meanings remain open, mystery is allowed to exist, and the ordinary can become quietly extraordinary.
